Sky Sports’ Alan Smith reminds us of his first and last appearance for England as well as telling us all about his very best performance for his nation.
It had been Saudi Arabia away. Because we flew on Concorde which was a thrill in 14, I remember.
I got on as a sub and it was not a really memorable performance by me. And it was going on and on and on for a time, but I remember Bobby Robson, that he gave a team-talk although I think we drew 1-1 in the end. Don Howe, his assistant, was stood alongside him and finally Bobby turned and said”Have you got anything to add, Don?” Don stated:”I believe we better let the lads become shifted. There is just 20 minutes until kick-off.” But this was Bobby. He loved to discuss football.
For substituting Gary Lineker I am very well known. I got heated up with Alan Shearer.
Graham Taylor told us to warm up and I got called back rather than Shearer, who was a young boy. Instead he came off, although I thought I would be going on Gary, that was my partner at Leicester back from the afternoon, I proceeded .
I didn’t have enough the time to think about it. I wanted to try and do my best, however it did not actually work out.
I scored a European Qualifier’s only aim at Wembley, which was. It was against Turkey and all my loved ones were up in the stand.
We didn’t play in the second half and we got booed off the pitch however I didn’t care.
I’d got the only aim of the game for my own country so that was enough, to get us three things at a qualifier.
