Former captain Ryan Jones considers the Wales squad have now been awarded”a massive lift” ahead of the Rugby World Cup, after 15,000 individuals flocked to see their open training session at Kitakyushu.
Wales arrived in the arena where they’re training from locals to a rendition of the Welsh national anthem, also are based at the southern Japanese town, which won’t host any games during the tournament.
The staff of warren Gatland get their tournament under way on Monday, September 23 from Georgia, also Grand Slam winner Jones claims the reception they’ve received will benefit the players.
“I have never experienced anything like this in my own career. It is astonishing and it’s been really emotional,” said Jones, who played for Wales from 2004-2014.
“It’s been hosting a party. This afternoon, we got up and we said’oh, I hope it goes well and people will develop’.
“Then to find the temptations and then to observe the gamers’ faces when they came out, it was simply magic.
“It has surpassed all our expectations. Since the men are just one week out from our first game, and to have an adventure like this brings it home how beautiful an event it really is it is great.
“It will give the players a massive lift. The fantasy was supposed to turn the city red and we have done that.”
Jones, who helped build links between the Welsh Rugby Union and Kitakyushu, included:”If you look back on things on your career, setting this was magnificent.
“Seeing the players when they came in the welcome party the other night, and seeing their faces , they didn’t understand it.
“They’ve not seen anything like this and they’ll remember it forever. I understand we will return and long may it continue.”
