Callum Johnson says WBO title-holder Sergey Kovalev – that fights SaulCanelo Alvarez month – is that the weakest of the four globe winners.
Was unable to fight WBA champion Dmitry Bivol this autumn due to a shoulder injury.
Nevertheless, the 34-year-old is currently eyeing a second shot at a world title battle next year, after his defeat IBF champion Artur Beterbiev in 2018.
Johnson explained:I think Kovalev is the weakest out of their four, to tell the truth, he is the weakest of the champions. Bivol is probably next.
Not concerning ability – I believe Bivol is maybe the very finest concerning boxing ability. However, I dont think he is the strongest and most powerful. Middleweight could be probably made by him .
He has very great footwork, and he does all very well and technically, to the eye to get a boxing purist he is fantastic and that he really is extremely good but I do not think hes got the crushing power that everybody thought hed at one point.
I really dont think hes got that many gears, I think he is what he is. Hes a top-level boxer but I believe he can be mad and he can be roughed up and that I do think I have the resources and the strength and the ability to accomplish this.
Kovalev comes up from Canelo in Las Vegas on November 2, and Johnson expects the Mexican to come out on top.
I think Canelo [wins]. I believe his best times Kovalev has seen.
Do not get me wrong, it is a difficult challenge for Canelo because he is jumping up two weights and Kovalev remains very, very good.
However, I believe if anybody can beat himnow the time is right to beat him and we understand how great Canelo is so its a struggle Im looking forward to watching.
Beterbiev takes on WBC champ Oleksandr Gvozdyk in Philadelphia on Friday as among the four belt-holders of the division go head to head.
Johnson is financing his own conqueror Beterbiev to beat the Ukrainian, who he rates as superior than the two Kovalev and Bivol.
He explained:The fight tonight is your best two, I believe we will find out who is the very best tonight.
I think Beterbiev wins. I hope he wins! [That] might be a bit of bias but I think I would be picking him to win because he is a strong fighter when Id never boxed Beterbiev and I only see him becoming too strong.
He is also an excellent boxer, hes got the amateur encounter, the amateur pedigree, like Gvozdyk, [but] I just expect Beterbiev to triumph.
It might be a close fight. Its a 50/50 that is real. However, I think Beterbiev will come out at the top.
Having missed the chance Johnson admits before setting his sights on one of the world champions he might have to examine his fitness using a struggle next year.
We will see what happens, he explained. I think Im going to have another fight before I get offered once, but I would jump directly into one, because Im a fighter and I want to fight for a world title again. Realistically Im likely to get to have a meaningful struggle and win that before I get my chance again.
I will fight those next season, whoever, whenever, wherever.
No matter makes sense, anything will be good for my career, Im happy to do.
