Callum Johnson states WBO title-holder Sergey Kovalev – that combats with SaulCanelo Alvarez next month – would be the weakest of the four globe winners.
Johnson, who pumped out Sean Monaghan in March, was not able to fight WBA champion Dmitry Bivol this fall due to a shoulder injury.
Nevertheless, the 34-year-old is eyeing a second shot in a world title fight next year, following his defeat to IBF champion Artur Beterbiev in 2018.
Johnson stated:I think Kovalev is the weakest out of the four, to be honest, hes the weakest of the champions. Bivol is next.
Not in terms of ability – I think Bivol is maybe the very best in terms of boxing skill. But I really dont think he is the most powerful and most powerful. He could make super middleweight too.
He has very nice footwork, and he does everything quite well and technically, into the eye to get a boxing purist he is fantastic and that he really is quite good but I dont think he has the devastating power that everyone thought hed at one point.
I dont think hes got that many gears, so I believe he is what he is. Hes a top notch fighter but I think he could be upset and he could be roughed up and now I do believe I have the resources and the power and the ability to accomplish that.
Kovalev comes up against Canelo in Las Vegas on November 2, also Johnson expects that the Mexican to emerge on top.
I believe Canelo [wins]. I think his best times, Kovalev has seen.
Dont get me wrong, it is a tough challenge for Canelo since hes leaping up two burdens and Kovalev is still very, very excellent.
However, I believe if anyone can defeat him, now the time is right to beat him and we understand how great Canelo is so it is a fight Im excited about seeing
As two of the branchs four belt-holders go head to 23, beterbiev requires on WBC champ Oleksandr Gvozdyk at Philadelphia on Friday.
Johnson is financing his conqueror Beterbiev to beat on the Ukrainian, who rates as better than Kovalev and Bivol.
He explained:The struggle tonight is your very best two, I think well find out whos the ideal tonight.
I think Beterbiev wins. I hope he wins! [That] might be a bit of prejudice but I think Id be picking him to win because he is a fighter, if Id never boxed Beterbiev and I only see him being too strong.
He is also a very good boxer, he has the amateur experience, the amateur pedigree, just like Gvozdyk, [but] I only expect Beterbiev to triumph.
It could be a close battle. It is a 50/50 that is genuine. But I think Beterbiev will come out on top.
Having missed out on the opportunity to fight Bivol because of injury, Johnson admits before setting his sights on a few of the world 39, he might have to examine his fitness using a fight.
We will see what happens, he explained. I believe Im likely to have another struggle before I get offered one again, but I would jump straight into one, because I am a fighter and I wish to fight for a world title again. Realistically Im likely to need to have a meaningful struggle and win that until I get my chance again.
Ill fight those next season, whoever, whenever, wherever.
Whatever makes sense, anything is going to be good for my career, Im delighted to do.
