Sky Sports’ Alan Smith reminds us of his first and last appearance for England as well as telling us all about his very best performance for his country.
It had been Saudi Arabia away. Because we travelled over on Concorde which was a thrill in 14, I recall.
I got on as a sub par and it was not a memorable performance by me. And it was moving on and on and on for a time, but I remember Bobby Robson, that he gave a team-talk although I think we drew 1-1 at the ending. Don Howe, his assistant, was stood next to him and eventually Bobby turned to him and said”Have you got anything to add, Don?” Don said:”I believe we better let the lads become changed. There’s just 20 minutes before kick-off.” But this was Bobby. He loved to discuss football.
For substituting Gary Lineker I am very well-known. I got warmed up together with Alan Shearer.
Graham Taylor advised us to warm up and I have called back instead of Shearer, who was a boy then. Rather he came off, although I thought I’d be heading on to associate Gary, who was my partner at Leicester back in the afternoon, I went .
I didn’t have time to consider it actually. I just wanted to try and do my best, however it did not really work out.
I felt that a European Qualifier’s only objective in Wembley, which was quite a joy. It was against Turkey and all my family were up in the stand.
We did not play well in the second half and we got booed off the pitch at the old Wembley, but I didn’t care.
I had got the only objective of the match for my own country so that was enough, to get us factors in a qualifier.
