India’s Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has asked the government to intervene within the removal of shooting from the 2022 Commonwealth Games at Birmingham.
India won seven gold medals in the sport at the 2018 Games.
But it’s been excluded from the Games.
At a letter into Nicky Morgan, he wrote:”The Indian public takes keen interest .”
His correspondence with the secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport also reported that India makes up over half 2.4 billion population of their 53-nation Commonwealth.
While he also added that”the International Mobility Federation [ISSF] has given to discuss the fee for addition of shooting Birmingham.
“It seems the decision to exclude shooting is based on the premise that shooting hadn’t ever been a sport that is compulsory and there’s absolutely no venue available for holding shooting events.”
Shooting has been included in every Games besides one because 1966 (Edinburgh from 1970), but is not one of their event’s’core sports’.
This past calendar year, shooting – together with cricket, beach volleyball, archery and Para-table golfing – voiced its wish to become a part of the Games.
An assessment panel comprised of representatives from authorities, in addition to Birmingham 2022’s organising committee and Commonwealth England, has been set up to assess each game’s case.
But in June, Birmingham 2022 declared that Para-table tennis just beach volleyball and women’s cricket had been successful.
The move has proved controversial, if the sport is not reinstated using all India threatening to boycott the event.
India topped the table for shooting the 2018 Games in Australia, claiming 16 medals.
