India’s Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has asked the British authorities to intervene within the removal of shooting against the 2022 Commonwealth Games at Birmingham.
India won seven gold medals in the sport at the 2018 Games on the Gold Coast, Australia.
But it’s been excluded from the Games for the first time since 1970.
In a letter to Nicky Morgan, he wrote:”The public takes keen interest in shooting.”
His correspondence with the secretary of state to Digital, Culture, Media and Sport also noticed that India makes up more than half 2.4 billion people of the 53-nation Commonwealth.
While he also added that”the global Mobility Federation [ISSF] has provided to share the price for inclusion of shooting Birmingham.
“It appears the choice to exclude shooting is based on the premise that shooting had never been a compulsory sport and there is no place available for shooting events.”
Shooting was included in every Games besides one since 1966 (Edinburgh from 1970), but isn’t among their occasion’s’core sports’.
Last calendar year, shooting – combined with tennis, beach volleyball, cricket and archery – voiced its wish.
An evaluation panel comprised of representatives from authorities, as well as the organising committee and Commonwealth England of Birmingham 2022, was set up to assess the case of each sport.
But in June, Birmingham 2022 announced that Para-table tennis just beach volleyball and women’s cricket had been successful.
