Katie Taylor can grow to be a two-weight world champion when she struggles Christina Linardatou to its WBO belt live on Sky Sports.
The Irish superstar has been crowned as the most lightweight champion following a hard-fought win over Delfine Persoon in June and now targets a domain in a higher weight category at Manchester Arena, with Anthony Crolla’s farewell struggle and Joshua Buatsi’s WBA light-heavyweight title eliminator from Blake Caparello.
Taylor plans to cement her position as the world’s finest female fighter in the not too distant future and fully is relishing her WBO title battle at the event.
“I had a number of my first pro struggles at the Manchester Arena and also to return in November and headline a card a couple years on is great,” said Taylor.
“It’s played host to a huge nights at boxing history so I’m honoured to be part of that tradition.
“it is a new challenge in a brand new weight and something I’m really enthusiastic about. I feel like I have much left to reach in the sport and getting a world winner is one of those goals.
“There are still numerous huge battles out there for me like the Amanda Serrano fight, a rematch with Delfine Persoon plus a struggle with Cecilia Br??khus however, the very first goal is November 2 and winning a second world title.
“I don’t have some issues making lightweight so that I believe I could move between the 2 weights. I want to push myself and Christina is an excellent world champion, so it’ll be a huge test for me.”
But Linardatou, together with 1 reduction and 12 wins, believes she could inflict a devastating first defeat on Taylor.
“I plan on leaving England with my name,” she explained. “If I need to knock on Katie Taylor out to be able to keep the title, that’s what I’ll do.”
Mancunian Crolla returns to the scene of his triumph, a stoppage win to make the WBA lightweight belt in November 2015, and also the 32-year-old will have one struggle this year after falling short against unified champion Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Buatsi recently stopped Ryan Ford in seven rounds in The O2, but should be given a sterner challenge contrary to Australian Caparello, a former world title challenger, who has shared the ring with Sergey Kovalev and Andre Dirrell.
Felix Cash also defends his Commonwealth middleweight title and Gamal Yafai can take another step towards a major name in the division.
“I’m so pleased to be back in Manchester with this massive show,” explained Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn.
“Katie Taylor has become established among the greatest stars in world boxing and she bids to make more history by becoming a multi-weight world winner with ambitious WBO super-lightweight winner Christina Linardatou.
“Hometown hero Anthony Crolla rolls out the dice one more time that he takes a part in his final battle in the game in the arena that has hosted many epic Anthony Crolla nights.
“Even the stabilisers are off for Joshua Buatsi because he takes a huge step up against demanding Australian Blake Caparello in a WBA world title eliminator and there’s a brilliant national middleweight clash between Commonwealth champ Felix Cash along with English champ Jack Cullen.
“There’s a lot more beneath those four conflicts on what’s going to be a enormous night of boxing.”
Adam Smith, Head of Sky Sports Boxing, stated:”We’re totally thrilled to be showing the very best female boxer in the world back on Sky Sports on this huge show. This is another test for Katie Taylor because the lightweight champion proceeds to cement her legacy in the sport and takes on all comers.
“Katie is a marvellous ambassador and inspiration to so many and we are thrilled to be working closely with her as we seem to feature both the very best in boxing and in women’s sport on Sky”
