As the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots see, the marquee matchup of Week 1 is also the very first Sunday night game of the season. Here’s why we enjoy the home side.
Celebrate that title with the fans these days, the reigning Super Bowl champion is supposed to open the year in the Thursday night Kickoff Game at home and then set it in the rearview mirror for good.
But with this being the NFL’s 100th anniversary year the league chose to set its earliest rivalry in the Kickoff Game.
Thus, the New England Patriots will have to wait until Sunday night to observe the record first Super Bowl title of Bill Belichick Era & the Tom Brady.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will be the opponent as they seem to conquer Brady on the road for the very first time. More on that shortly. Perhaps it’s a good thing that Patriots aren’t in the Kickoff Game since the last time it was hosted by them , in 2017, they were handled easily from the Kansas City Chiefs.
That is the only loss in four Kickoff Games of New England, however this won’t count as one.
Here is the fourth time in franchise history the Patriots open a year against the Steelers. In addition they did in 1979, 2002 and 2015 — if the Patriots were coming from a Super Bowl win that the ???02 and ???15 games were.
They’d win both of these games but dropped in 1979. It is the fifth period these clubs and New England leading 4-1 play. The Patriots’ last loss overall (non-preseason version) was 15 last year, 17-10 in Pittsburgh when Brady threw an uncharacteristic late interception deep in Steelers territory.
It’s the 33rd all-time meeting and it’s tied in 16.
It’s a new era for the Steelers as they begin life with no two of the greatest players at their location in the NFL in All-Pro running Le’Veon Bell and celebrity receiver Antonio Brown. They are together with the Jets and Raiders, respectively.
Pittsburgh is accustomed to playing Bell James Conner proved a more than satisfactory replacement and because he sat out last year all and about 1,500 yards from scrimmage in 13 games. He will remain the bell-cow in 2019.
Technically, the Steelers are used to playing Brown as well as he was benched due to his antics last year for Week 17. When Baltimore edged Cleveland to claim the AFC North pittsburgh won that game but missed the playoffs.
Ben Roethlisberger has a nice Brown substitute in JuJu Smith-Schuster, that grabbed 111 balls for 1,426 yards (possibly more than Brown) and seven scores last year. James Washington ought to be a great deal more involved since the newest No. 2.
The Steelers will unveil two new starting linebackers from free-agent inclusion Mark Barron and first-round pick Devin Bush out of Michigan. The Steelers have been bandied around Bush, who has 4.4 40-yard speed. He is the next Ryan Shazier of the team.
In most of the top-rated sportsbooks of SBR, the Patriots are tied with or only slightly to win Super Bowl LIV at Miami. And why not? Sure, the Rob Gronkowski is retired (we believe he returns later this season), but Brady and Belichick remain there.
Brady will have a full season of recipient Josh Gordon reinstated in suspension. But, first-round receiver N’Keal Harry begins annually on injured reserve.
In addition, starting center David Andrews, an anchor in front of Brady for many years, will miss the season after recently being hospitalized because of blood clots. The group probably will start Ted Karras in the centre.
Selected using the 221st choice from the 2016 NFL Draft, Karras has played in 45 games — starting in five. There’s also the chance it’s Russell Bodine, that had been recently obtained in trade and has started 74 NFL matches.
New England is currently 5-1 in Gillette Stadium vs Pittsburgh that is all time. When Brady was out injured, that loss came from the 2008 regular season.
Hehas NEVER lost at home and’s 11-3 including playoffs from the Steelers. That’s surprising. The Pats had won five straight in the series before that Week 15 reduction this past year.
We like New England with a touchdown.
