Ask a scout, coach or participant to compare No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray to an NFL QB and one instant response normally comes back: Russell Wilson.
When it’s elusiveness, arm strength, deep-ball precision, baseball background or the obvious height contrast, Wilson is the most common name conjured for Murray. The hype would be a whole lot.
After an offseason of work outs and all the comparisons between Murray and Wilson agree.
“I see hundreds of similarities,” fresh Cardinals guard J.R. Sweezy stated when asked about the Murray-Wilson contrast, via Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. “I always saywe must find this guy actually play. I believe he’s going to be just fine. But to be compared to Russell Wilson is a huge compliment.
“He’s going to back this up. I just love he’s becoming compared to everything and him. He’s going to be great”
Murray entered offseason workouts with sky-high expectations after being drafted No. 1 overall into Kliff Kingsbury’s system in Arizona. The combo of all pass-heavy sets, together with Murray’s ability to scramble from stress, makes a perfect match on paper.
Murray matched the hype, according to mates as we hit the summer weeks before training camp.
“Everything that I heard, he has lived around,” guard Justin Pugh said. “And I have heard a great deal of good things, therefore it has been great up to now.”
Murray’s teammates commended him on everything out of his playbook acumen, fluidity in the pocket, rate, accuracy and leadership. All traits that Wilson boasted as a passer.
“He’s cool, calm, collected, sleek,” Sweezy said of Murray. “Create a mistake, return, correct it. He is on it, frankly.”
It’s a fantastic sign that Murray’s teammates provide glowing reviews of the rookie quarterback. Opposite or tentative assessments would portend trouble for a rebuilding franchise that dumped one first-round QB to take a swing on Murray.
At the exact same time, we’ve only seen football in shorts. Murray will have a lot more to process and establish once the pads are on in training camp and the preseason starts in late July.
“He has shown nothing but great direction and hard work and doing the right thing,” Pugh said. “When we get the pads on, we will find a lot more of a feel for one another, and I am excited about that.”
